The word "Thermo-Plastic" is derived from two different words. "Thermo" meaning "Heat", and Plastic, when put together means a "plastic applied by heat". In the outdoor furniture world, there are two main thermo-plastics that are used in coating steel tables, benches, trash receptacles, and other site amenities. Both of these plastics are highly durable, both have UV stabilizers to resist fading, and anti-fungal components, but each also has key characteristics which could influence your purchasing decisions.
Here's a complete discussion about the plastic coating styles from Webcoat.
Plastisol: The first of the two thermo-plastics is a liquid form of PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride). At first, plastisol was the ideal coating, because there was nothing on the market like it. Plastisol has a soft finish to it and allows for a "comfort" factor with the steel furniture. One key element of Plastisol is that coats very thick (approx. ¼"). Because of the resilient nature of plastisol, the thickness aids in durability. Another attractive feature is that plastisol can come in any color; in the past this wasn´t an option for outdoor furniture. Once the steel is dipped in the plastisol, heat is applied to form a bond between the two. Although plastisol usually has a dull finish to it, Robert Webb with Webcoat, Inc. developed a special way of heating the plastisol which causes it to have a high gloss shine (up to 90%). The high gloss shine is important for the overall look of the product and it also assists with UV protection. Although plastisol is a wonderful coating there are two main cons for the product. Since Plastisol is a liquid, after the product is dipped, there are runs and drips where the excess liquid flows off. There are techniques to avoiding the drips and runs on the products, but they usually result in drips being on the bottom of the product, being removed after cooling; an experienced manufacturer will dip the product in a way where these runs will occur in the least noticeable places. The second problem with plastisol is a chemical compound called phthalates. Some studies have shown that plastisol can release a very small amount of phthalates into the environment over a period of time. Recently, the manufactures of plastisol compounds have created a formula that is compliant to all health and safety regulations; it is important when purchasing plastisol products to ask if they are phthalate compliant or not. Polyethylene: The newest form of thermo-plastic that is being used in the outdoor furniture industry is polyethylene. Polyethylene is a plastic that comes in the form of powder. There are two basic ways to apply polyethylene to the product: by dipping or spraying. Both applications work very well, but the dip application seems to coat the product better. Polyethylene is a little thinner coating (approx 1/8") than plastisol but is very durable. One main advantage that polyethylene has over plastisol is that it has no drips or runs after coating. This is important on products where the drips and runs cannot be seen by the public (when backs of park benches are exposed). Polyethylene generally comes in a high gloss finish. This finish can cause problems with the product because it is very sensitive to scratches and marring. Webcoat, Inc. uses a textured polyethylene that has the same durability as the high gloss polyethylene but does not scratch or mar, and continues to look good throughout the years.
No matter which coating you choose, both have their own pros and cons. In order to determine which coating is right for your amenities, you must look at location, function, and personal preference. Making the right decision will help make sure that your outdoor seating area will be the best fit for you needs.
